logo research

Here I am going to look at some logos. I am going to try and concentrate on band and music artist logos so that it is relevant logos and can easily get ideas and inspiration for the logo that I am going to design for the band. But also I am going to look at logos which are just for any company or person just because I think that it is good to see all kinds of logos just so that I can pick certain aspects of logos that I like and take this forward to the client to see what kind of logo they would like.

I think this will then help me with the mood of the logo, CD cover, CD label and business card.

The KISS logo is very recognisable world wide and so I think maybe something quite bold and colourful could work.

Rolling Stones: A logo like this as previous is also instantly recognizable. It is a good and simple piece of graphic design which could be done again in a different style and image to suit the bands music.

I really like this logo. It is quite big for a logo but I think it works. I am hoping that the client will also like this logo. Then I will know whether they are after something a little more vibrant or simple.

The idea behind this Scissor Sisters logo is clever but is also recognizable if you know the band. But the good thing about this logo is that it ''does exactly what it says on the tin'' which is sometimes the best way of making a logo. Although with the band I am designing for it could be a little more difficult but the initial logo is good.

This is an obvious logo. But it can be used in many different forms, changing the colour and the place it can be put on a CD cover etc. Multi purpose!

After looking through quite alot of logos which are bands it has been quite obvious that most bands actually have used the band name in their identity or logo. I think that I will take this on board and talk to the client about this to see whether this is something they are willing to go ahead with as a part of their identity.

-----------------

I am now going to look at a few logos which I think are good as stand alone logos (without the name of the company or artist) but also just logos which aren't bands.

This isnt a band logo but I really liked the simplicity of this. It is not a band logo but I think there is an element in there that could be useful for helping the client decide what kind of logo they would like.

Introduction to the band!

I was paired up a guy named Olly who is in a band called Globox. They have given me a name for the album which will be called Pocket Grease.

The sound cloud website for their music is: https://soundcloud.com/ollyknightsmith

I would say this music is kind of a 'chill out' themed kind of music, I find it quite relaxing to listen to and so I am going to try and show this in the album cover that I am going to design.

I have had contact with the client, emailing about work and seeing what he thinks of ideas that I send.

brief

-->
Context
Working with a client is one of the most important skills a designer can develop. In this project you will work with a music artist or band to create an identity and CD cover. You will work to your client’s requirements and will take responsibility for researching what the client wants and whether or not your designs meet their needs.

You should make sure that you have some contact details and are able to set up developmental meetings with your client. You are expected to attend an evening music performance by your client before Christmas.

Please note that you will be assessed on the typographic module so what ever else you do with your design, you must pay close attention to your type choices and applications. Remember that your client may have opinions about this too.

The Brief
Please note that you may be working in competition with your classmates.

You are to design a “brand” identity for your allocated music client, which must include a logo. This should be applied in the first instance to a business card. The rest of the information for this must come from your client,

You are also to design a CD cover and CD label for your client (artist or band). There may be an insert as well. The styling and format of this must be created in negotiation with your client.

You will be assessed on these items only. However, if you wish to continue this project with your client you may build up further portfolio pieces.

Specific Learning Outcomes
Please refer to the Module Guide on Moodle for specific learning outcomes against which you will be assessed. You will receive feedback on the project but it will be graded when the entire Type Portfolio is submitted.

Research
There will be an initial meeting with your client and further meetings with them will be needed.
You should make sure that you have sufficient research material and that you understand the style, genre and ethos of your client’s music persona. You are advised to obtain audio research as well as visual and verbal.
Make sure you take notes and have some form of contact details – you may set this up through staff if you prefer.
